Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card Review
The Capital One® Walmart Rewards™ Card gives Walmart shoppers competitive buying power within the Walmart brand as well as impressive flexibility in points redemption. Having no annual fee, the Walmart Mastercard makes for a compelling retail card for anyone who shops at Walmart on an even occasional basis and fills a gap that popular rewards categories have excluded.
Introductory Offer: 5% Back In-Store with Walmart Pay
New accounts with the Walmart Rewards Mastercard enjoy a special bonus category for the first year of account membership. Earn 5% cash back in Walmart stores for the first 12 months after approval when using the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card with Walmart Pay – the quick and touch-free way to pay with your phone at Walmart.
Walmart Pay is a digital wallet app that lets you streamline your shopping experience with Walmart. The Walmart Pay platform works with any valid major credit card saved to the user’s Walmart account. Then, tap the smart device on any reader at Walmart stores to enjoy a fast, secure, and germ-free experience.
Remember that Walmart Pay only works at Walmart stores. The service does not work elsewhere, including Sam’s Club stores. This effectively means the card earns 5% back for the first year at Walmart, in-store and online.
How to Earn Rewards
While Walmart Pay might be limited, that’s not to say the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card lacks value – far from it. Since the many rewards cards exclude Walmart from their bonus categories, the card still stands to offer significant rewards to Walmart shoppers.
- 5% back at com(includes Grocery Pickup and Delivery)
- 2% back in Walmart stores & Walmart and Murphy USA fuel stations
- 2% back on restaurants and travel
- 1% back on everything else
Adding Murphy USA fuel stations is a great feature for anyone who regularly commutes by car or loves to hit the open road. Gas rewards are always popular, but with over 1,700 stations across the United States, the 2% back on gas provides plenty of value for money.

Walmart Store Card
Walmart and Capital One offer more than one credit card for American consumers. There is a store card version of the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card – the Walmart® Store Card. The card is similar to the Walmart Mastercard in that it earns the same great Walmart rewards, just without the ability to use it to make purchases anywhere the Mastercard payment network is accepted worldwide.
Another difference between the store and Mastercard credit cards is the credit requirements. Store cards, also called closed-loop credit cards, typically feature lower credit requirement thresholds when compared with traditional, open-looped credit cards bearing the Mastercard, Visa, or American Express name. Retail/store cards are great for establishing a positive payment history with unsecured credit, as they are accessible to people with average credit.
Applying for the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card is actually applying for both cards, with those unsuccessful with the Mastercard option also considered for the store card.
How to Redeem Rewards
The emphasis on online shopping and the card’s multiple redemption options give the Walmart Card from Capital One a striking similarity to the Prime Visa. Both cards have no annual fee or a foreign transaction fee. If you were having difficulty choosing between the credits from these two retail giants, they certainly aren’t making it easy.
Like Amazon, Walmart.com offers next-day delivery – but one potential area where Walmart has Amazon beat is the availability of in-store pickup. It offers a workaround for the sub-par 2% back for in-store Walmart purchases and gives shoppers the option to retrieve their necessities within a few hours, thanks to their hundreds of brick-and-mortar locations.
Regarding points redemption, both merchants allow points for future purchases, a statement credit, gift cards, and travel at an individual point value of $0.01 (100 points = $1). Points never expire as long as your account is active.
Other Card Features
Other noteworthy features of the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card include:
- Competitive, variable APR
- $0 Fraud Liability
- No foreign transaction fee
- Mobile wallet compatibility with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.
- Access to Eno, Capital One’s digital assistant
Cardholders also enjoy essential security protections that come from Mastercard, including:
Zero Liability Protection | Mastercard Global Services | ID Theft Protection |

Should You Apply for the Capital One Walmart Rewards® Card?
Overall, the Capital One® Walmart Rewards™ Card is an exciting new retail credit card that could rival the wide reach of the Prime Visa. The few caveats of the card (the lack of a signup bonus) are minor compared to the potential the card has, allowing shoppers to earn rewards where they already shop regularly. In-store purchases will only have the premier earning potential during the first 12 months of opening an account, so cardholders will want to make Walmart their go-to store for grocery and household item purchases before the 5% earnings expire.
This card is great for that shopping for families, keeping an office stocked, or anyone else who makes frequent purchases – but lacks the volume to justify a membership to wholesale clubs like Costco or Sam’s Club.
