AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard® Review
The AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard® is a versatile cash back card that rewards drivers on every section of their journey. The card, from U.S. Bank, earns big points on travel, as well as on everyday items – all for no annual fee.
Who Can Apply for the AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard®?
It may seem common-sense, but AAA credit cards are only available to those who are new or existing AAA members. AAA, the American Automobile Association, is a federation of motor clubs from across the United States and provides a vast array of benefits for members.
AAA membership benefits include access to:
- Travel deals
- Insurance, including home, auto, life, rental, etc.
- Auto discounts
- Roadside assistance
- Banking accounts, including savings, checking, investments, and credit cards
The AAA Dollars Plus Mastercard, as well as other AAA credit card products from U.S. Bank are only available to AAA members in select regions. Residents of the following regions may apply for the U.S. Bank version of the AAA credit cards:
- Southeast (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana)
- Midwest (Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota)
Please note that the availability of the U.S Bank AAA Cards, such as the AAA Dollars Plus Mastercard vary, depending on the county of residence of AAA members. While BestCards makes every effort to provide the most up-to-date information, please consult your local AAA website for more details.
How to Earn Rewards
The AAA Dollars® Plus Card earns a very healthy 3% cash back on qualifying AAA purchases, as well as net travel purchases. Three percent back on travel is an excellent perk, made even better by the 2% back cardholders receive at grocery stores, gas stations, and drug stores. Every other purchase with the card earns 1% back.
There are plenty of credit cards that offer 2% cash back on either gas stations or grocery stores, with notable examples being the Discover It Chrome Card, the Commerce Bank Special Connections, and the USAA Rewards Visa Signature – all of which also feature no annual fee.
The AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard®, on the other hand, earns 3% back on these categories while also receiving an impressive 3% back on travel. This 3% back is boosted by the addition of 3% back on AAA purchases as well, meaning cardholders can use the card pay their membership, receive roadside assistance, or any other costs related to the automotive club.
The 2% cash back at drug stores, such as Rite Aid, CVS, or Walgreens, means that the card effectively offers savings almost everywhere your weekly shopping or daily commute takes you. Need a prescription filled or maybe just a quick water for the road? Perhaps you need to pick up some cupcakes for a surprise birthday at work? Or, perhaps you are stuck on the side of the road and need a flat changed. No matter what, you’ll earn rewards with the AAA Dollars® Plus Card.
Introductory Bonus Offer
As a good cash back card, the AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard®, the signup bonus that kicks the cash back up a notch. New accounts receive $150 back after spending $1,500 on qualifying net purchases within the first 90 days.
Fifteen-hundred dollars may sound like a lot, but it equates to $500 a month for the first three months. Given that the card earns 3% back on travel and 2% back on gas, groceries, and at drug stores, that is an easy goal to reach.
That $150 cash back bonus is equivalent to 10% back on the first $1,500 in purchases. If all of the $1,500 were spent on AAA or travel purchases, like a flight booking, the minimum required to reach the signup bonus would be worth an additional $45 cash back. This places the potential value of the signup bonus at up to $195, or up to 13% back on the first $1,500 in purchases for the first 90 days after opening an account.
How to Redeem Rewards
Rewards earned through the AAA Dollars® program are redeemable for merchandise and gift cards. Gift cards are in the form of AAA Rewards Cards in the following denominations:
While redeeming AAA Dollars® for AAA Rewards Card offers additional value (as much as 40% more value when redeeming 500 AAA Dollars®), the fact that there aren’t as many rewards options with the AAA Cards is somewhat frustrating.
Generous Interest-Free Period on Balance Transfers and Purchases
The AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard® comes with two excellent introductory periods of 0% APR. New cardholders receive 0% intro APR for the first 12 months on both purchases and balance transfers, which is a fairly long introductory period for a no annual fee rewards card of this magnitude.
No interest for the first year on balance transfers makes the AAA Dollars® Plus a solid option for those who have existing credit card balances that they want to pay down over a full year. Even if the balance isn’t entirely reduced over the year, however, the regular APR with the card is competitive with other comparable rewards cards.
While the rate will vary considerably depending on the creditworthiness of the applicant, the rates fall neatly in-line with the national averages for such a card, meaning AAA members won’t be shortchanged when it comes to a great rate.
The same 12-months interest-free on purchases offers the chance for AAA members to splash the cash without worrying about additional interest. This benefit is especially handy thanks to the introductory statement credit offer, allowing cardholders to invest in their automobile through AAA, book a vacation, or just use their new card to buy their weekly groceries and gas.
Other Card Feature
Beyond the solid point-earning potential, the great introductory offers, and the competitive typical APR, the AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard® also benefits from no foreign transaction fees. No foreign transaction fees on a rewards card aren’t uncommon but they none the less offer exceptional value, turning the card into a potent and powerful tool all over the world – and not just in the areas served by AAA.
The card also benefits from no annual fee, which is always a welcome sight to see when deciding on whether to apply. No annual fee for 3% back on travel and 2% back on gas, groceries, and at drug stores is equally impressive, usually found in rewards cards that charge an annual fee of around $95.
Should You Apply for the AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard®?
AAA offers excellent value for money for members, and the same applies to the AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard®. Earning 3% back on travel plus AAA purchases is an amazing offer for those who are always on the go – especially with a card that charges no annual fee. That value is boosted further by the 2% back on gas, groceries, and at drug stores, making the card as useful as it is versatile.
That versatility is further enhanced by 0% intro APR for the first year on both purchases and balance transfers. While balance transfers are best left to low APR cards, which offer exceptionally low rate every day, the typical APR with the AAA Dollars® Plus is competitive enough that it works just fine for those who have a smaller balance they want to pay down – and expect they can pay most of it off within the first year.
The major letdown with the card is the AAA Dollars® program, with the most value coming from redeeming points towards AAA gift cards. While these gift cards have value, more options are always preferable.
Overall, however, the AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard® is a reliable and valuable friend for every midwestern AAA member who wants an everyday financial tool to help them with their commute, their weekly shopping, or when life takes them further afield. Other popular options include the Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer (unlimited 2% back) and the Citi Custom Cash℠ Card.
