About American Savings Bank

American Savings Bank is a Hawaii-based financial institution with its headquarters in Honolulu. The bank is the third-largest bank in Hawaii, with over $6.7 billion in assets as of 2020. American Savings operates over 50 branches in the state, across five islands, and has a history dating back almost 100 years.

History of American Savings Bank

While American Savings Bank is one of the largest banks in Hawaii – the state it calls home – the bank’s history begins in Utah. The bank was founded in 1925 in Salt Lake City as Mutual Savings and Loan.

In 1932, Mutual Savings and Loan merged with the American Building and Loan Company of Honolulu to form American Mutual Savings and Loan. The bank added 13 branches through the 1950s and 60s, including locations on Oahu and Kauai. American Savings and Loan expanded to its fifth island, Maui, in 1974 when it merged with Maui Savings & Loan.

The American Savings Bank name was adopted in 1987, with the headquarters located in Honolulu. The following year saw the bank acquired by Hawaiian Electric Industries, which later purchases First Nationwide Bank and the assets of Bank of America Hawaii Division
